Adamsen delivered setback

Arnie Adamsen cannot, after all, run for mayor and have his City Council seat if he loses.
The city has decided to let stand the ordinance stating that members of the City Council who run for other offices must resign.
This means Adamsen must submit a letter of resignation from his council seat when and if he files his paperwork for the mayoral race. That resignation would take effect when the new mayor is sworn in.
Mayor Jan Laverty Jones sponsored the bill in hurried fashion last week in an attempt to get final council approval on Monday -- the day before filing for the election opens.
Initially, the council was to have met in a special session to introduce the bill and then hold a recommending committee hearing on its merits. Normally, that process takes six weeks.
When several council members questioned the timing and rushed nature of the bill's introduction, the special meetings were canceled.
