Outside linebacker La'anui Correa, arguably the most promising prospect of UNLV's freshman football class this past season, has asked for and been granted his release from his scholarship commitment so that he can transfer to the University of Hawaii.
The 6-3, 225-pound Correa, who starred for perennial prep powerhouse St. Louis High of Honolulu, saw action in nine games as a true freshman and registered 10 tackles. Four of those tackles were for 26 yards in losses, including a safety.
Correa, who also was recruited by Colorado, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii out of high school, has a mother, Leilani, who works at the University of Hawaii.
"We told everyone if they didn't want to still be a part of this program (following the firing of Jeff Horton) that they could move on," UNLV coach John Robinson said. "(Correa) is the only one to take us up on it. He decided he wanted to go back home."
