UNLV golfers tied for 5th after 1st round of tourney

The fourth-ranked UNLV men's golf team shot a six-under par 282 Wednesday to forge a three-way tie for fifth place after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate being on the par-72, 6,552-yard Kaneohe Kipper Course in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
Oklahoma State, which shot a blistering 16-under as a team (272), was the front-runner while Alabama and Brigham Young were tied for second at nine under (279).
San Diego State was in fourth at seven under (281) while Oklahoma and Fresno State join UNLV in fifth.
Two Rebels were in the top five among individuals. Michael Kirk and Charley Hoffman fired four-under 68s to tie for fifth place and were just one shot off the lead.
Four golfers, including OSU's Edward Loar and Landry Mahan were tied for first at 67.
Other Rebels competing were Jeremy Anderson, whose first-round 72 put him in a tie for 36th place, Scott Lander (tied for 60th, 74) and Adam Scott (tied for 76th, 76).
The second 18 holes will be played today and the final round Friday.
