Homeowners told to make way for monorail route

The plan will extend the current monorail, which runs between Bally's and the MGM Grand hotel-casinos, but the controversy has been over which route to use.
Desert Inn Estate homeowners were opposed to a route that would run through their neighborhood. They complained that their homes would be severely devalued by the monorail and that it would be too noisy.
Despite their protests, Clark County commissioners approved the route that will have stops at the Aladdin, Flamingo Hilton, Harrah's and Imperial Palace, then head east on Sands Avenue and north on Paradise. The monorail will also stop at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton and Sahara.
The Venetian and the Desert Inn resorts opposed an alternate route that would have taken the monorail west instead of east at Sands Avenue between the two resorts to a station at the Fashion Show Mall, then north.
Commissioner Bruce Woodbury said without the cooperation of the Desert Inn resort, there was no other alternative but to build through the neighborhood.
