State checking to see if high school exam posted on Internet

Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 | 10:37 a.m.

State schools chief Mary Peterson says the possibility is being investigated by the attorney general's office but far there's no evidence of an Internet posting of the test high school students must pass to graduate.

While one of four different tests is used each time it's given, about 12 items remain the same on each exam as a way to consistently measure student performance.

The topic came up Tuesday during a legislative subcommittee hearing on the state Department of Education's budget for the next two years.

Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, said the state needs clear authority to fire any educator who compromises test integrity. It could cost the state thousands of dollars to replace a compromised test, and Rawson said the culprit should pay those costs.

Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, said that with the age of the Internet, test security will become more of a problem. He said the easier solution would be to constantly change the test so security isn't an issue. Peterson agreed, but said it could be more costly.
