Senate subcommittee OKs school zone change
Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 | 10:37 a.m.
SB80 allows school districts to change school zone signs to allow normal speed driving when students are inside school property.
Sen. Bill O'Donnell, R-Las Vegas, said he proposed the bill because he's aware of the frustration some drivers feel about slowing down when students are safe in school.
O'Donnell said some roads in Las Vegas have flashing lights to warn drivers to slow down when students are walking streets near a school. Those lights then are turned off when school is in session.
But other schools have only signs warning motorists to drive 15 mph or 25 mph during set hours, such as 8:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The bill will be heard by the entire Transportation Committee Feb. 23.
