County commissioners want more say in where public can smoke

The commission has passed an ordinance asking the state to give local boards of health control over tobacco-related matters.
The same resolution is expected to appear before city councils of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Mesquite and Boulder City in the next month.
Officials call the smoking ban a local control issue.
State law says local governments cannot impose more stringent restrictions on smoking than provided by state law.
A state law bars smoking in public buildings, public areas of medical buildings and food stores, childcare facilities and public buses. The law exempts casinos.
The law gives property owners the right to bar smoking on the premises and requires restaurants with a capacity of more than 50 patrons to provide a no-smoking area.
