Reno paying $600,000 to officers who worked through lunches

Monday, Feb. 15, 1999 | 9:19 a.m.

"I'm pleased as much as I can be. I am not pleased that it happened ... it could have been doubled," Chief Jerry Hoover said.

While officers will get about $6,500 each, depending on how long they worked for the city, the actual amount owed could have totaled $1.2 million to $1.5 million, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported on Monday.

Hoover said the money would come out of the department's budget, but would not affect service levels. He said the reductions would be made in such areas as purchases, training and other non-essential spending.

Ron Dreher, president of the Reno Police Protective Association, said his group settled because nobody wanted to drag out the dispute.

"By doing what they did, the city saved taxpayers probably a half million dollars," he said.

The union refused to settle for anything but cash, rejecting offers of paid time off or other benefits.

The city will pay the $600,000 now and the police department will repay the amount over the next three years or so, according to Finance Director Lisa Sadow.
