Planning commission blocks senior housing complex

The North Las Vegas Planning Commission deadlocked in a vote Wednesday night on the Carefree Village senior housing project.
The tie amounts to a denial, but the developer is expected to appeal the ruling and have the case decided by the City Council.
The proposal by the Templeton Development Group for a 472-unit senior apartment complex at the corner of Alexander Road and Allen Lane was originally denied by the commission in August after about 200 residents protested the development.
Since then the project has found its way back on the agenda numerous times, and even helped spawn a master-plan amendment that will allow the city to put senior apartment complexes in low-density zones.
Commissioners Shari Buck, Tom Langford and Robert Eliason all voted against the project Wednesday night, while Chris Montanez, Nelson Stone and commission Chairman Tom Lisiewski voted for it. Commissioner Harry Shull was absent.
"It comes down to location, location, location," Eliason said. "The residents that are living in that area bought homes with the idea that other residential developments would be around them."
On Jan. 27 the commission voted 5-2 to amend the master plan to allow for senior housing projects in low-density areas.
