Letter: Republicans doing their bit for history
Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999 | 12:25 p.m.
O'Callaghan weakened his whole argument that the Republicans in the Senate who have been exploring "findings of fact" are simply attempting "to give the GOP leaders in the House a string to hang their election on when trying to stay in office next year."
The counterargument, and a very sound one, is that the Republican senators are seized with the desire to leave a full and complete factual record of William Jefferson Clinton's scoundrelly conduct for all of history to see.
It isn't every day that a president of the United States lies to a grand jury and obstructs justice but escapes removal from office.
A resolution of censure, if indeed passed by the Senate, will in no way carry a timeless record of the injury to the U.S. Constitution inflicted by this president.
Besides, it may well be reversed by the next Democrat-controlled Senate, expunging all nasty little admonitions from history!
