SUN STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
The 12-year-old daughter of racing driver Al Unser Jr. has a good chance of recovering from a rare spinal condition, two Albuquerque neurosurgeons say.
"It is expected she will make a gradual, progressive recovery and become fully independent," Dr. Douglas Barrett said in a prepared statement released Wednesday through Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Edward C. Benzel said that recovery from the condition, called transverse myelitis, can occur in anything from two weeks to a year or more. Barrett said transverse myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord caused by an attack by the body's own immune system.
