Editorial: Momentum gathering for airline regulations

Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999 | 11:58 a.m.

And the news coming from the nation's capital is not much better for the airlines. Last week bipartisan legislation was introduced that would give passengers more rights, including giving them 48 hours to cancel tickets that currently are nonrefundable. To top it all off, the Republican chairman of the House Transportation Committee has introduced a bill that would make airlines pay their passengers if they're stranded in a plane, as occurred this year during a snowstorm in the Midwest.

When even ardent conservatives, who usually believe in less government intervention, are climbing aboard the airline regulation bandwagon, you know something is up. One of the reasons for their outrage is that many of the senators and representatives fly home weekly, either feeling firsthand the effects of deregulation or getting an earful from their fellow passengers.

If personal experience is what it takes to get Congress to do the right thing, maybe we should get all members of Congress to enroll in an HMO.
