Check of car seats good for shot at college tuition
Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999 | 10:59 a.m.
Get your kid's car seat checked for safety and receive a chance to send that child to college years from now on a free scholarship.
That's the offer the Clark County Safe Kids Coalition is making for this Saturday at several locations around town.
In recognition of Child Passenger Safety Week, the organization is offering free car seat inspections from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations: Pat Clark Pontiac GMC, Dagerman's Just For Kids, Henderson Chevrolet, MountainView Hospital and Nellis Air Force Base Child Development Center.
Safe Kids officials note that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children younger than one year. By inspecting car seats, the organization hopes to make a significant reduction in that risk locally.
Parents who participate in the car seat inspection program can get their children entered in a drawing for a Nevada Prepaid Tuition Scholarship that can be used at a state college, university or an out-of-state private school.
"If you invest in your child's future now, we will invest in their future education," Jeanne Cosgrove, director of Clark County Safe Kids Coalition, said.
The drawing for the scholarship will be in December. Area businesses contributed $7,000 to purchase the scholarship for Safe Kids.
More than 2,800 children have been enrolled in the Nevada Prepaid Tuition program since it was launched Oct. 1. The program is accepting enrollment applications for newborns and will open enrollment to children age 1 through the ninth grade starting this fall.
