Students skip class in protest over cancelled assembly

The students held their own assembly in the gym Friday morning before Vice Principal John Carlson and other staff members managed to move them. Many of the protesters left school at that point.
"We had our assembly canceled and we haven't done anything to deserve it," said senior Melanie McKenzie, a protest organizer. "We might get suspended for this, but all of us are standing up for what we believe."
The students also were upset over the school's attendance policy and graduation requirements, McKenzie added.
The homecoming activities and basketball game were postponed Jan. 30 because of a problem with the heating system. The assembly and dance have not been rescheduled.
Carlson said school returned to normal later Friday and students who did not return to classes will be given an unexcused absence.
He said he would meet with the student council Monday to address their concerns further, and the school would try to have an assembly before the zone basketball playoffs.
More than 1,400 students attend the school.
