UNLV baseball team to open season Friday against UCSB

The UNLV baseball team opens the 1999 season on Friday with the first of three games against UC Santa Barbara at Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels, coming off a 31-24 season in which they finished fourth in the Western Athletic Conference Southern Division, return 20 players including preseason All-American outfielder Ryan Ludwick.
Ludwick, who played for USA Baseball's National Team last summer, hit .353 with 21 doubles, 14 home runs and a team-leading 57 RBIs.
UNLV will start junior right-hander Bryan Gidge in the opener against the Gauchos Friday at 3:05 p.m. Gidge compiled a 2-1 record and a 4.95 ERA in six games last season before an arm injury shortened his season.
Freshman left-hander Ryan Olson will get the start on Saturday and junior right-hander Andy MuCulloch will start Sunday's series finale. Saturday's and Sunday's games begin at 1:05 p.m.
The Gauchos already have played three games this season. After opening the a three-game series with Cal State Northridge with a 12-3 victory, Santa Barbara dropped the next two games 8-4 and 13-1.
