Henderson assemblyman seeking free credit status reports

Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999 | 11:54 a.m.

Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, said he knows from personal experience that residents often don't know of errors in their credit reports because they refuse to pay the costs for copies.

"It is your information," Perkins told the Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee on Wednesday. "For you to have to pay for your information is improper."

As a Henderson police officer, Perkins said he often does background investigations on people seeking privileged licenses.

"Time after time you find credit problems they are not aware of," he said. "If the item is old, they may not be able to fix it."

His AB8 would require large credit reporting companies to give any Nevadan who requests it a free report on credit status. Perkins said it costs the companies $20 to $50 to prepare the reports.
