Feasibility study for golf course approved

Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999 | 11:22 a.m.

The North Las Vegas City Council unanimously gave the Golf Pacific Group the go-ahead to conduct a feasibility study on 320 acres for development of a golf course in the city's northwest.

Michele Richardson, management analyst for the city, told the council 160 acres of the proposed development is currently under lease from the Bureau of Land Management to the city for its model airplane park and the UNLV Urban Conservation Project. The other 160 acres is adjacent to the north.

Mayor Michael Montandon emphasized that the council only gave approval for city staff to prepare an exclusive negotiating agreement with the Golf Pacific Group for a feasibility study.

"This is not an approval of a contract," he said.

Montandon said there is a lot of work ahead, but there is a possibility of having a quasi-public golf course on the site.

"There are a tremendous amount of issues to be resolved," he said, referring to water, design standards and access. "There also are issues on the BLM lease to be resolved and on the model airplane field."

Resolving those issues will be expensive, Montandon said.

"The Golf Pacific Group has approached us and said they would be willing to spend the money to take on the feasibility study and look into those issues," he said.

The Golf Pacific Group has 90 days in which to conduct the study.

"This is very exciting for us," Councilwoman Paula Brown said.
