School officials consider random gun checks

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999 | 11:55 a.m.

School security officers searched the car after receiving several anonymous tips that he had the weapons.

Police confiscated a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition, pellet gun, metal pipe, brass knuckles and a baseball bat fashioned into a club.

There was no indication that any violence was planned.

The sophomore "indicated to officers that he brought the weapons onto school property because he was in fear for his safety from some older students at the high school," Chief Deputy Bernie Curtis of the Carson City Sheriff's Department said.

Jim Parry, Carson City Schools Superintendent, said school officials already were debating the possibility of random searches for weapons.

"It's one of our greatest concerns and something we're always thinking about," he said.
