Letter: Give tax break, but not to rich
Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999 | 10:14 a.m.
The Republican budget writers are proposing a 10 percent tax cut across the board. I am in favor of it. But only for the nonrich -- those earning $50,000 and more should not be given the cut. Instead, the tax rate for the rich should be increased by 10 percent.
The rich/poor gap has reached historic widening. The big widening began with the Reagan fiscal policy.
The progressive income tax rate for the rich was drastically reduced by the Reagan tax policies. And subsequent tax legislation has increasingly benefited the rich. The pro-rich lobby has control of the Congress.
The nonrich are practically voiceless on tax legislation. The rich have gone to the bank with speed and yardage faster and better than Terrell Davis.
The nonrich need tax relief. And the rich should give up some of the brazenly obtained loot.
