Cop accused of lewd actions facing disturbing peace charge

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999 | 10:43 a.m.

A Metro Police officer accused of using lewd behavior while harassing clerks at a northwest area convenience store will face a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace.

Store clerks at the 7-Eleven at 870 N. Rainbow Blvd. told police that Officer Kendell Walker, 26, entered their store about 4 a.m. on Jan. 20 and harassed them.

Metro's sexual assault detail received a report of the incident on Jan. 22 that alleged Walker entered the store and committed a lewd act in front of three female clerks, police said.

"At this point we can't comment on the circumstances alleged by the clerks or on what happened until Internal Affairs completes its investigation," Officer Steve Merriwether said. "All I can say at this point is that it has been determined that there was no exposure."

The district attorney's office decided not to prosecute Walker for open and gross lewdness because there was no exposure, police said, but the Las Vegas city attorney's office will prosecute Walker on a charge of disturbing the peace.

Internal Affairs is still investigating Walker's behavior. Walker will remain on paid administrative leave until the investigation is done, police said.
