Suit challenges ownership of newspaper

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 | 11:35 a.m.

A former officer of the Nevada Daily Legal News alleges in a lawsuit he was cheated out of his ownership stake in the Las Vegas newspaper.

In a Clark County District Court suit, David M. Wray, who said he served as vice president and general manager of the paper for nine years, alleged he was led by Hoyt Sibley, his stepfather, to believe he would gain ownership of the business as he developed and expanded the publication and its subsidiaries.

But after Sibley's death in 1997, Wray alleged he discovered he was a victim of fraud and that his stepfather had failed to fulfill his promise. The suit said Sibley had asked Wray to leave his employment in New Jersey in 1983 to return to Nevada and take over the publication.

Wray, who said he is asking for an accounting of Sibley's estate and a trust, believed to be valued at more than $3 million, also alleged Nevada Daily Legal News managers Scott Sibley and Luz Munoz are in wrongful possession of the newspaper.

"This is just another frivolous lawsuit that will in a matter of time be dismissed," said Scott Sibley, publisher of the publication.
