Fireworks show to light up downtown Reno on New Year’s Eve
Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 | 9:57 a.m.
Downtown casinos, the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority and other local businesses chipped in to pay for the $100,000 pyrotechnic extravaganza, being billed as "2000 Falling Stars."
The fireworks will be launched from various rooftops in the downtown area. The show starts at 11:50 p.m. Friday and will last about 15 minutes.
In past year, about 20,000 people have crammed the downtown area to greet the New Year.
Officials are expecting a bigger crowd this year as the world bids farewell to the 1900s.
The show will be computer controlled and choreographed to pre-recorded music.
"We'll have crews on each rooftop to keep an eye on things," said Michael Thyne, entertainment director at the Silver Legacy Resort-Casino. "The music ranges from Sinatra to Ethel Merman."
