Letter: Mayor shows he’s playing politician
Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 | 9:51 a.m.
The mayor said the board would not have enough power, but if it did, that, too, would be abused by every person looking for a big settlement against Metro. Most likely the board will be just another opinion body looking for more power, probably from the federal judiciary, violating the principle of federalism that has made the U.S. constitutional government the oldest and most prosperous in the world.
A civilian review board, no matter how democratic, must be polarized to usurp the police department. Civilian unity with the police is the only way for Metro to evolve and make positive changes. This attempt to balance power goes straight into the face of progress and I do not believe that the mayor has a clue as to why.
