Information sessions scheduled on Wednesdays

The American Cancer Society is offering free classes about cancer each Wednesday from Jan. 5 through Feb. 23.

Doctors, nurses and social workers will lead discussions on understanding cancer treatments, self esteem and intimacy, managing the effects of treatment and using resources. The classes will be held 6-8:30 p.m. at Summerlin Hospital, 657 Town Center Drive. To register call 798-6877.

Take a tax break for donating vehicles

The American Lung Association of Nevada is accepting donations of used cars, trucks, RVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles or boats.

Gifts delivered by Friday may be eligible for a tax deduction for the fair market value of the vehicle for 1999. Donors should call 431-6333. Towing is free.

Registration begins for MLK tournament

Registration for the Martin Luther King Jr. basketball tournament will be held through Jan. 7 at the Las Vegas Municipal Sports Office, 821 1/2 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Children ages 11-14 may register. The tournament will be Jan. 14-15 at Charleston Heights Community School, Gibson Middle School, Chuck Minker Sports Complex and Baker Park Community School.

There is a charge of $150 for each team. Call 229-2256.

Variety of hikes offered in scenic area

The following hikes are being offered at Red Rock Canyon in the coming weeks. Call 363-1922 for times and reservations.

Talent competition

Children 6 to 18 who play a musical instrument or perform a novelty act are invited to participate in the city of Las Vegas' 21st Annual Search for Talent Competition. For more information, call 229-6211.

Hospital helps programs of local agencies

St. Rose Dominican Hospital awarded more than $36,000 to five local agencies to enhance community programs and services.

Henderson Allied Community Advocates received $7,000, Habitat for Humanity $5,000, St. Therese Center, $6,000, Clark County Public Education Foundation $8,900 and the Women's Resource Center received $9,160.

The grants were awarded through the hospital's Catholic Healthcare West Community Grants Program.
