Editorial: Mingling of slots, cartoon characters

Nevada's state gaming regulators are doing the right thing as they seek to adopt regulations that would set standards for slot machines using cartoon character themes. The tobacco industry got into trouble after one cigarette maker used the cartoon character "Joe Camel" in its advertising, so eyebrows were raised when some slot makers started developing slot machines with cartoon characters that children also find appealing, such as the "Pink Panther."
Last week Nevada gaming regulators held a hearing on a proposed regulation that would prohibit slot machines based on a product intended for those who are under 21. Slot machines using cartoon characters have become the latest whipping boy for the anti-gambling movement. It has even prompted Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a GOP presidential candidate, to call for an investigation by Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. Nevada regulators seem genuine in their concern, but if other states that permit slot machines don't take the same serious tack, don't be surprised if federal intervention isn't attempted.
