Silver State Disposal truck crashes; 2 die

Monday, Dec. 20, 1999 | 11:24 a.m.

Two Silver State Disposal Service workers died this morning when their truck crashed through a guardrail on State Road 158 and plummeted 300 feet down an embankment, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.

The truck went off the roadway several miles from Kyle Canyon Road at about 6:50 a.m. and landed in a holding pond for a nearby golf course. The truck then was covered in the water, Trooper Scott Flabi said.

One of the men was thrown from the truck during the 300-foot fall and was found on the side of the embankment. The other man was still in the truck when it went under the water, he said.

Highway patrol officials said it appears the accident didn't involve any other cars. The truck crashed through the guardrail at a curve in the road, Flabi said.

Silver State officials referred calls to Lee Haney at Rogich Communications Group who handles public relations for the waste disposal company.

Haney said few details about the accident were known this morning. He said the men were heading to Mount Charleston on their normal route. The men, whose names were not released, had been driving the route for a couple of years.

"Our thoughts go out the drivers' families. It is very tragic, especially near the holidays," Haney said.
