Letter: Kudos on Unser story
Friday, Dec. 17, 1999 | 2:14 a.m.
Thanks for the basically positive, fair piece on Little Al Unser and the Indy Racing League ("Unser excited about switch," Dec. 14).
I happen to think that if the media in the areas that the IRL runs would put a positive (but realistic) spin on the drivers, cars, and competition, the IRL will grow. Right now it is the best-kept secret in sports. The drivers are good, as I know you recognize, and the competition is generally fierce.
The IRL does what American racing fans want: They race on ovals, they race close, most drivers speak English pretty well and they are accessible -- something the NASCAR guys are losing focus on.
