Health District issues carbon monoxide advisory
Friday, Dec. 17, 1999 | 3:53 a.m.
The Clark County Health District's Air Pollution Control Division issued the first air quality advisory for carbon monoxide today as level approached the unhealthy range.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary trips in their cars, to use Citizens Area Transit buses whenever possible and not to burn wood in their fireplaces during evening hours.
Carbon monoxide increases in wintertime air usually between November through January because cooler, heavier air is trapped beneath lighter, warmer air, causing the invisible gas from vehicle exhausts to build up.
Most carbon monoxide comes from vehicle exhausts, an estimated 94 percent, Air Pollution Control Director Michael Naylor said. The remaining emissions come from residential wood burning, lawn mowers, off-road vehicles and construction equipment.
