The state Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety says a 30-day grace period given motorists to register their cars by mail has ended.
The mail in-registrations are now being handled in 10 to 12 days, department spokeswoman Kim Evans said Thursday. But she cautioned that car owners should mail in the registration renewal at least 10 days before the license plates expire.
The department, at the suggestion of Gov. Kenny Guinn, hired 20 extra people to handle the backlog when the snafu associated with the new Genesis computer system hit the agency in September. The new computer system contained innumerable bugs and resulted in long lines at the offices.
