Not all New Year’s Eve shows a ‘grand’ experience

Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999 | 9:40 a.m.

Las Vegas' night life will be filled with enriching experiences New Year's Eve, especially for some of the more costly entertainers.

Barbra Streisand is getting up to $2,500 for her show in the Grand Garden Arena at MGM Grand; Rod Stewart's most ardent fans are shelling out $1,000 to get into the Pavilion at the Rio hotel-casino, and Bette Midler's best tickets for her Mandalay Bay Events Center are going for $500.

One thing about Vegas, though, it is very democratic when it comes to getting your money.

It will take cash from anybody.

For those of us who have modest budgets, but still would like to celebrate the dawning of the new century, there are plenty of things to do that won't cause our credit cards to self-destruct.

For example, Buddy Greco and the Lezlie Anders Orchestra will be be in the Grand Ballroom at the Resort at Summerlin beginning at 8:30 p.m.

However, even though the evening will include a five-course dinner and champagne, the $275 price tag is still pretty steep for some of us.

If you want to keep your costs between $0 and $150 per person, there are still lots of things to do.

Actually, I lied about the $0. If that's all you have then you probably will want to stay home and turn in early, or stay up late and watch Dick Clark or whomever ring in the new year on television.

But, for $150 or less, there still is a lot to choose from.

For example, for $50 (actually $49.99) you can party into the next century with the daughter of Las Vegas lounge icon Louis Prima. Lena Prima will be singing with the Spiral Staircase in the Le Briso lounge at the Riviera hotel-casino. The show begins at 10 p.m. The price of admission includes four drinks.

Call 794-9433 for ticket information.

Even cheaper is the $49.95 magic show in the Showroom at the Lady Luck hotel-casino, where Steve Wyric will have what's billed "A Magical Millennium Celebration" beginning at 10:30 p.m. Admission includes champagne and party favors. For more details, call 385-4386.

Cheaper yet is a $25 cover charge at Opportunity Village, 6300 W. Oakey Blvd.

The Village is planning something a little different -- it is offering families with children the opportunity to celebrate the New Year without the children missing their bedtime by observing the East Coast midnight hour rather than the Vegas' Pacifit Time Zone celebration.

By celebrating with the New York residents, the family can experience the event together, and mom and dad will have time to leave the kids with a sitter while they go out and celebrate a second time.
