DMV officials say agency has caught up on mail renewal backlog

Because of that, Deputy Director Ginny Lewis said a 30-day grace period enacted by Gov. Kenny Guinn in October is no longer necessary and has been discontinued.
"We also would like to reassure the public that because of enhancements to the new computer application and the additional staffing that was a part of the governor's plan, we do not intend to have a backlog again," Lewis said.
The turn-around time for renewals by mail is back to 10 to 12 days, Lewis said.
The agency switched to a new, $35 million computer system called Project Genesis in September. But the system was plagued with problems from the get-go.
The processing of mail-in renewals weren't the only delays. Because of computer problems, many motorists were forced to stand in long lines, some for up to eight hours, at DMV offices to conduct routine business.
