State program for kids is growing
Many Nevada kids who are not even out of diapers are having their future college plans secured.
The Nevada Prepaid Tuition program has exceeded its initial enrollment goal by 50 percent, state Treasurer Brian Krolicki said, noting that in the program's second year more than 2,500 children have been enrolled.
"Our mission is to assist as many families as possible in providing for their children's future education," Krolicki said. "Nevada parents clearly understand the value of this program."
The children may attend any accredited U.S. college or university through the program that is administered by the treasurer's office.
The program locks in a tuition rate. The earnings on invested funds are tax deferred until the child begins attending college. They are then taxed at the child's income level. Parents can make lump-sum, monthly and five-year payments.
