Ball rolling for senior housing

Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999 | 10:08 a.m.

At a special meeting Tuesday, the North Las Vegas City Council approved a low-income senior housing complex to be built in the city's redevelopment area.

The council's unanimous vote to transfer 3.9 acres of city land to the redevelopment agency set the wheels in motion for the agency to vote to accept a $25,000 nonrefundable deposit from the developer and sign an agreement with the developer to build the 72-unit Owens Senior Project.

The $4.7 million complex will be built at the corner of Owens Avenue and Davis Place. The developers are a partnership between Alliance Property Group, Kaufman & Broad, and the Community Development Program Center of Nevada.

Danielle Taef, vice president of development services for Alliance Property Group, said ground should be broken by March or April. Although there is no waiting list yet for the property, Taef said she will begin contacting other nonprofit organizations to encourage seniors to apply for the housing.

The complex will offer 60 one-bedroom units and 12 two-bedroom units as well as a community center, said Kenny Young, the city's redevelopment manager. Seniors will qualify affording to their monthly income, targeting those who fall 40 percent below the city's median income.

The rent for a one-bedroom unit will be $320 a month and $385 for a two-bedroom unit, Young said. In addition, the tenants will pay $70 to $82 a month for utilities.
