Letter: Health District doing its best to protect public
Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999 | 9:11 a.m.
The reality of the matter is that this effort is a priority for the Health District, but crafting new and effective regulations is a process that cannot be accomplished overnight. However, the steps that must be taken to complete the regulations are already under way. Two public workshops have been held to date, and in December the Board of Health will act on a proposal to map acreage and locations of vacant land with loose soil that can become airborne during high winds.
Keep in mind that regulations to control dust from disturbed vacant land will affect not only the developers, but public and private landowners as well. To simply "cough up" dust rules without adequate input and accurate, current information would not only be irresponsible but could lead to ineffective regulations that do nothing to promote the health of the public.
Promoting public health has always been the top priority of the Health District and its board members. It is for that reason that we will continue to address this issue in a manner that is expeditious, responsible and in partnership with all stakeholders.
