Officials investigate fire at Baptist Church building

A fire this morning extensively damaged an East Owens Avenue church building.

Las Vegas firefighters got the fire in the College Park Baptist Church's adult education and fellowship building under control in about 30 minutes, said Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. None of the other church's buildings were damaged.

A church maintenance man smelled something burning about 8:50 a.m. Firefighters found a blaze in a second-floor bathroom of the building. The fire had spread to the attic and went through the roof, Szymanski said.

The church is near Rancho High School, but the fire was contained before spreading to other buildings and evacuating the school was not necessary, he said.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
