What are we bid?

Every year, the Sun and its reporting staff are inundated with free stuff, such as hats, T-shirts, golf shirts, playing cards and glow-in-the-dark cuff links -- well, not glow-in-the-dark cuff links -- but lots of goodies nonetheless.

Sometimes these items are merely an expression of goodwill between the people behind the stories we report on and the newspaper staff. Other times, they are meant only as payola, a reason to entice us to cover a story in which we normally would have little interest.

The bottom line: It's in the budget. A lot of companies have a lot of money to spend on a lot of promotional items that we do not accept because, ethically, it wouldn't be right.

Secondly, where would we put all of it?

For now, all this neat stuff is hermetically sealed in a warehouse on the east side of Las Vegas -- which, suspiciously, looks a lot like a vacant locker in the photo department.

But we've had to make room in the locker for something more useful -- such as one of those cool photo vests with all the pockets, so everything -- including the three-dimensional, NASCAR Challenge Daytona 500 board game, a $149 value, and a Buddy Greco CD, which retails for ... well, let's just say less than $149 -- must go.

And it must go for a good cause, of course.

All money raised by the second Las Vegas Sun Holiday Charity Auction will be turned over to the Shade Tree Shelter for women.

So if you want to contribute to a noble cause, are in search of a unique Christmas gift or stocking stuffer or simply need an item to trade for what Jay has in the box on "Let's Make a Deal," read on.

Instructions

Study the brief descriptions of the items listed (up to 160 from 78 last year). Items listed twice should be bid on separately. Multiples of an item, offered as one item, are noted in parentheses.

List your bid by using the numbers listed, on a sheet of paper or a 3-by-5 index card (preferred). You may bid on as many items as you like, but each bid must be listed on a separate piece of paper or index card. No exceptions.

Mail or drop-off bids

Send to: Las Vegas Sun Christmas Auction, PO Box 3904, Las Vegas, NV 89127.

On each bid, list the price you are willing to pay for the item, along with your name, address and daytime and evening phone numbers.

Or drop off your bid at the Las Vegas Sun office, 800 S. Valley View Blvd.

E-mail rules

You may also bid on items by mailing Ron Kantowski (kantowsi@vegas.com). Again, send a separate e-mail for each item you want to bid on.Items must be picked up in person, so if you e-mail from Dubuque and aren't planning on spending the holidays in Las Vegas, save the bandwith.

Deadlines

The deadline for bidding on merchandise is Dec. 17. Merchandise can be picked up during business hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the Sun building beginning Dec. 21. Winning bidders will be notified by telephone. All sales are final.

Please do not call the Sun to inquire about merchandise.
