Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999 | 11:04 a.m.
Ohl, of Orchard, Texas, had a time of 7.0 seconds to win the round and $12,908. Blair Burk of Durant, Okla., was second at 7.7, and Herbert Theriot of Poplarville, Miss., was third at 7.9.
Ohl passed calf roping leader Fred Whitfield for the all-around lead. Ohl leads by only $116 in the all-around, but still trails Whitfield by $4,999 in the calf roping standings.
"It's great to have the all-around lead," said Ohl, who won his first calf roping world title last year. "I just need to keep winning, keep putting pressure on Fred and see what happens."
Ohl said his focus is on continuing to move up in the NFR average and catching Whitfield in calf roping. Ohl is third in the average, 2.2 seconds behind second-place Jeff Chapman of Athens, Texas.
"I need to get into second place in the average," Ohl said. "If I can win calf roping, the all-around will just be a gift. My focus is to win the calf roping and let everything else take care of itself."
