Ninth pedestrian death brings police warning

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 | 10:12 a.m.

The warning comes after 51-year-old Patsy Marks became the city's ninth pedestrian fatality of the year.

Police Lieutenant Hal Wood says most of the accidents result from inattention on the part of the driver, the pedestrian or both.

In his words, "We need to get the message out that when pedestrians are in the crosswalk, there is no force field over them protecting them from a car."

He says the message also needs to go out to drivers to keep an eye out for people not only in crosswalks, but also in the middle of the street.

Nine of the eleven people killed so this year in Reno traffic accidents have been on foot.
