NFR notes: Horse’s style points boost Hawkins in bareback win

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 | 10:15 a.m.

Pete Hawkins proved Monday night that it's not always how you ride, but what you ride.

Hawkins won the bareback riding competition in Monday's fourth go-round at the National Finals Rodeo, but conceded he didn't necessarily have the best ride.

Hawkins scored an 86 on Calamity Jane to win the go-round, edging Lan Lajeunesse's 85 on Python Skoal.

"Lan made the best ride of the day, I felt," Hawkins said. "The horse I had was a little bit showier, so I got a few more points from the horse."

"I like a little movement to (the horses) to keep me loose and aggressive. I'll get to showing off too much if one's too easy for me, and it might get me in trouble."

Although Hawkins continues to lead the world bareback riding standings with more than $112,000, he fell out of the running for the average championship when he failed to score in the first go-round, then failed to cash in the third.

Other fourth go-round winners:

* Steer wrestler Brad Gleason won his second go-round of the Finals with a time of 3.50 and earned $12,908.71. Todd Suhn and Ricky Huddleston tied for second at 3.70 and pocketed $8,952.81 each.
