Mountain West Conference honors Kambala

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 | 10:14 a.m.

UNLV's Kaspars Kambala was named the Mountain West Conference player of the week for Dec. 6, making him the second Rebel in three weeks to earn the honor. Rebel point guard Mark Dickel got the nod for the week of Nov. 22. Kambala averaged 24.5 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in two games at the Food Lion MVP Classic in Charlotte, N.C., over the weekend.

* Utah coach Rick Majerus wants reserve point guard Trent Whiting to take a redshirt season, starting after this week, to recover from a painful bone condition. Majerus said Whiting won't play tonight against Utah State but he might see action Saturday at Washington State. Under NCAA rules, players can take a medical redshirt season if they don't play in more than 25 percent of their team's games. Whiting has played in five games.
