Letter: Trade deficit is real problem

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 | 9:38 a.m.

When he can't understand, or the facts get in the way, he resorts to labeling such as isolationist, know-nothing, etc.

"Free trade" is not equitable or reciprocal as President Clinton practices it. We open up markets to countries who then deny us entry to their markets. Communist China, in which the military is involved in trade, has not earned special trade status or entry into the WTO.

Pay attention to the WTO meeting in Seattle. Why are there protesters there from all segments of our society? Shouldn't there be more debate about trade in which we have a $300 billion-plus trade deficit?
