Letter: Beware of new law regarding handicap parking

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 | 9:37 a.m.

Prior to Oct. 1, handicapped persons with the proper placards or handicap plates could legally park in a parking spot marked "Van Accessible" or in a striped area next to a handicap parking spot.

The new law states that only vans with side sliding doors from which wheelchairs can be lowered can legally park in these areas. No other vehicle can park in these areas.

For 60 days from Oct. 1, Metro has had its volunteers putting notices on vehicles parked in these areas. However, as of Dec. 1, 1999, tickets have been issued to vehicles parked in striped parking areas, even if the vehicles have handicap plates or handicap placards hanging inside the vehicle.

So please avoid an expensive ticket. Do not park in striped parking areas even if you have a handicap plate or placard. Also pass this information to any relatives or friends who have handicap placards or cars with handicap plates.
