Letter: Nation sees only the rosy side of Las Vegas
Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999 | 10:03 a.m.
Now Southern Nevada is growing by leaps and bounds. Many have been lured here for the affordable housing, no state income tax, moderate climate and master-planned communities.
What is not promoted is the rest of the story, such as high auto insurance costs, astronomical automobile registration fees, corrosive tap water, expensive gasoline, high grocery bills, overcrowded schools, flash floods and the nation's highest divorce rate.
In addition, many independent organizations are reporting startling statistics that cannot be ignored. For instance, according to UnitedHealth Group, the nation's second largest insurer, a comprehensive look at lifestyles, access to health care, disease and mortality finds Nevada among the least healthful states in the country.
For those concerned about uncontrolled growth in the valley, maybe the truth will deter others from relocating. Las Vegas is what it is, a great place to party and a nice place to visit.
