Letter: Health care ‘backlash’ welcome

Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999 | 10:04 a.m.

Now even the industry's trade group has identified the need for major reform within the health care system. The admission from the American Association of Health Plans further demonstrates the widespread support for passage of a patient's bill of rights.

Unfortunately, due to the influence of large HMO and insurance companies, legislation to extend an enforceable set of patient protections is languishing in a conference committee. However, I am confident that the actions of the American Association of Health Plans, as well as the decision by UnitedHealth Group to let doctors decide what medical treatments are necessary, and the overwhelming support of the American public, will lead to a continued effort to ensure American families will have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their health care will be there when they need it.
