Man not using crosswalk hit by car

A 59-year-old Las Vegas man died Wednesday night after he was stuck by a car while trying to cross Paradise Road.

The pedestrian, who was not using a crosswalk, was crossing the street in the middle of the block south of Sierra Vista Drive about 9:20 p.m. A 1984 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Kristopher Glenn, 27, of Las Vegas was unable to avoid the man and struck him, Metro Police said.

The pedestrian, whose name was not released until his family can be notified, died at the scene. No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing, police said.

This was the 99th fatal accident in Metro's jurisdiction this year and the 31st pedestrian fatality.

Three men rob courier of gems

Three men robbed a jewelry courier of $75,000 in gems at a Strip motel parking lot Wednesday.

The courier left a jewelry store near Alta Drive and Decatur Boulevard about 5:10 p.m. in his rental car. Three men in a white sport utility vehicle bumped the courier's car, but the courier continued on to the Diamond Inn Motel, on Las Vegas Boulevard South north of Tropicana Avenue, Metro Police said.

The men in the sport utility vehicle followed him and parked behind his car at the motel. The courier locked his car doors as two of the men started yelling at him in Spanish, police said.

The third man smashed the passenger side window of the courier's car and grabbed the bag containing the gems, which was sitting on the passenger seat. The courier also grabbed the bag, but the robber stabbed the courier in the arm and he let go, police said.

Police had no description of the three male suspects.

A United Coin driver was robbed Wednesday night as he was finishing a drop-off at the Big Game Club near Charleston and Decatur boulevards.

Two armed men forced the driver into the United Coin van about 10 p.m. and drove to Evergreen Place where they met a third robber, Metro Police said.

The three men took the money and fled the area, leaving the driver unhurt, police said.

There have been several similar robberies of slot machine route trucks during the past month.

AG rules against current state law

Despite a state law to the contrary, people who gather voters' signatures for petitions do not themselves have to be registered to vote, Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa says.

Del Papa said Wednesday Nevada law should be changed to match the U.S. Constitution.

The state law requires that those who circulate initiative petitions and referendums must be registered to vote.
