Idaho Power Co., an electrical utility that serves portions of Idaho and has 1,200 Nevada customers, filed an application with the Public Utilities Commission to compete in the Nevada market when the industry is deregulated in March.
Idaho Power spokesman Dennis Lopez said the application will allow the company to continue to serve its customers in Jackpot, Jarbidge, Mountain City and Owyhee near the Idaho border as well as keep its options open to expand into the rest of the state.
Two companies, Utility.com and Enron Corp., have been licensed to sell power when competition begins and six other companies, including the parent company of Nevada Power Co., have applications pending.
