Storm brings 6 to 8 inches of snow to Sierra

Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999 | 9:38 a.m.

Chains or snow tires were mandatory this morning on most northern Nevada routes into California - on Interstate 80 from the state line all the way over the Donner Pass, on SR431 the Mount Rose Highway and U.S. Highway 50.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was reporting icy conditions north and west of Reno.

Some Lake Tahoe ski resorts were reporting as much as 1 foot of new snow from storms in the past few days.

Power crews kept busy Tuesday repairing downed power lines in the strong winds that blew through the Washoe and Carson valleys.

"My shingles were flipping off all night," said Antonia Castro of the Virginia Foothills southeast of Reno. "The wind shuffled them like cards."

Wind gusts from 60 to 80 miles per hour were common. One gust reached 91 miles per hour late Monday night at the Kingsbury Grade.

"It was a widespread windstorm," said Rudy Cruz of the National Weather Service's Reno office.

A new cold front headed into the area is expected to push low temperatures into the mid-teens in Reno later in the week.
