Two state patrols make seat-belt pitch

California and Nevada Highway Patrol troopers are teaming up to make the stretch of road between Las Vegas and Barstow, Calif. safer.

The two law enforcement agencies are sponsoring "Operation Safe Belt," an advertising and awareness campaign to remind drivers to buckle up.

The program will kick off on Labor Day Weekend with public service announcements and posters in casinos with the safety message, NHP spokesman Scott Flabi said.

In 1998 there were 943 crashes on Interstate 15 between Barstow and the Nevada state line. In those crashes 46 people were killed and another 816 were injured, said CHP inland division chief Alex Jones.

"So far this year, 38 have lost their lives on I-15," Jones said. "Of the 38 killed, 30 were not wearing their seat belts. Clearly these 30 people chose to continue gambling even after they left Las Vegas."
