Alleged Lahontan killer was on probation

Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999 | 11:16 a.m.

Lyon County District Attorney Robert Estes said on Monday he has been told John Stinchfield Jr. was on probation from a robbery conviction when he was apprehended at the recreation area.

Estes said he had not received the reports on the incident from sheriff's investigators, so he does not have the specifics of either the shootings or Stinchfield's criminal record.

An alcohol-fueled dispute during a fishing trip Saturday evening apparently escalated into a double killing at the reservoir.

Stinchfield allegedly shot George Robles, 58, as he sat in a vehicle, then shot Robles' girlfriend, Phyllis McKellar, 69, farther down the beach. The victims, both from Fernley, were each shot in the head.

Stinchfield was arrested about 12:20 a.m. after he blundered into an off-duty officer's camp, carrying a .22-caliber rifle.
