Fires near Reno subside somewhat
Monday, Aug. 30, 1999 | 4:28 a.m.
Finally, a bit of a breather for Nevada wildland fire crews.
A 45,000-acre blaze 45 miles north of Reno is fully contained and just two 20-person crews remain there for mopup.
And the Sellem fire 80 miles southwest of Ely is 50 percent contained. It has burned 10,000 acres of sage, grass and pinon pine.
After a little rest, most of the fire fighters who are leaving the lines in Nevada will be heading west toward major blazes throughout California.
Meanwhile, a one-thousand-dollar reward has been posted for information leading to a conviction in the 15-hundred-acre Sutro fire in the north end of Carson City.
No structures were damaged, but the Thursday night blaze prompted fire crews to suggest voluntary evacuations of a handful of homes in the Duck Hill area.
